This Savage Song- Review!

This Savage Song – V.E. Schwab

V.E. Schwab has become one of my new favourite authors, I’ve read four of her books the latest one being ‘This Savage Song’. I’ve read Vicious, A Darker Shade of Magic and A Gathering of Shadows, and every book of hers that I’ve read I had never failed to rate them anything lower than four stars! V.E. Schwab has such a unique take on typically over-used story narratives of monsters and magic however adds her own magic touch to it. This Savage song is one of those books, it focuses around Verity a city divided in two, one half owned by Harker, who controls the North and the South control by Flynn. Harker promises protection from the monsters to those of pay, and Flynn protects the innocent from sinners. The novel focuses on Kate and August, both raised either side of the country, Kate is trying to prove that she is her father’s daughter and that she isn’t weak, whilst August is trying to prove that he isn’t a monster. I love how the reader is given two perspectives, it allows for the reader to understand the pain August feels as he tries to hide who he really is, and the pain Kate feels trying to prove that she is strong and not weak. Through the use of these perspective the reader is conflicted between who the enemy is and who isn’t. To begin with I personally found it hard to agree and find a connection with Kate, to begin with she annoyed me with her elite view of herself. However as the events of the novel progress Kate becomes relatable and I found myself warming to her, August I loved from the beginning, I felt his pain of wanting to be normal throughout the story, and he was just a loveable character that I just wanted to wrap in a blanket and give him a cuddle. The overall first book in this duology was a fantastic beginning, it left me on the edge of my seat wanting to know more, gasping at certain scenes and couldn’t wait to see how it was going to play out, I cannot wait to delve into the next instalment of this world and see how it’s going to be wrapped up. If you haven’t read any V.E. Schwab I would highly recommend her, she is a fantastic author, who has such a unique view of monsters it’s fantastic.     I gave this book 4*

  1. I’m at 70% with this book and I’m loving it so far. Already I can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel. It’s a nice change since it’s been a while since I’ve been able to enjoy reading so much.
